Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry is pulling away from his Democratic rivals in the final days of Arizona's presidential preference race, building a solid lead in the state after badly trailing the rest of the pack only five weeks ago, a new Arizona Republic Poll shows.

The statewide poll of likely Democratic voters also suggests that Kerry is the growing choice for many because he is viewed as the most likely Democrat to beat President Bush in November. Nearly half of the 603 likely Democratic voters surveyed said they thought Kerry "has the best chance to defeat President Bush in November."

Kerry's Arizona camp was buoyed by the news, but Arizona campaign director Mario Diaz vowed to remain focused on winning more support with last-minute outreach efforts aimed at senior citizens, veterans and Latino voters. The Republic Poll found 23 percent of the voters still undecided on who to vote for.
