DescriptionDuring a week in which candidates are filing for what are sure to be high-profile elections in November, Las Vegas officials lamented that when they hold an election, almost no one comes.

Many city elections are held in odd-numbered years, when the general public's attention is not on voting. And it shows -- Las Vegas' election last year mustered only 13 percent of registered voters to the polls. It was worse in 2007 -- only 8.5 percent of voters showed up.

The topic came up during talk on performance measures at Wednesday's Las Vegas City Council meeting. One measure of whether civic engagement is improving would be increased voter turnout.

City Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian said people should keep pushing the Legislature to add Southern Nevada cities to the state election calendar so their elections would occur in even-numbered years. Cities in Northern Nevada made that switch years ago.
