Description | Years of lobbying by Canadian veterans have convinced the federal government to restore the names of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Defence Minister Peter MacKay will make the announcement on Tuesday in Halifax, sources have told The Globe and Mail.
The names were changed in 1968 by Paul Hellyer, who was Liberal defence minister when he amalgamated the army, the navy and the air force into a single structure with a single uniform. Since that time, the navy has been known as the Maritime Command and the air force has been known as the Air Command. |
