Description | As President Barack Obama went head to head this week with Republican lawmakers over how to raise the federal debt ceiling, Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued a statement saying that an effort to reduce the federal deficit could hurt New Orleans if Congress adopts the GOP's preferred "cuts-only approach."
"It could mean less funding for infrastructure and recovery projects, less (block grant) funding for recreation and blight-fighting initiatives, less money for important federal initiatives like dredging the Mississippi River and coastal restoration, and less funding for public safety programs like COPS," Landrieu said in a prepared statement. "This type of approach could have catastrophic effects on cities like New Orleans."
A dyed-in-the-wool Democrat whose sister, Mary Landrieu, is one of just two Democrats in Louisiana's nine-member congressional delegation, Mitch Landrieu didn't weigh in on the specifics of the various proposals offered by either party. But he gave a decisive nod to any option proffered by his party's leader.
"President Obama continues to reiterate his commitment to New Orleans, and I am sure that his plans to reduce the deficit while increasing government efficiency will help spur the revitalization of our economy and quality of life," Landrieu said. |
