Description | Democratic leaders in the state Legislature said Wednesday they are speaking with up to a half-dozen Republican legislators about switching parties.
"They're just unhappy with having to take the caucus positions, (and) having to vote party over people," said House Minority Leader Craig Ford, D-Gadsden.
House Speaker Mike Hubbard, R-Auburn, said he found that "hard to believe."
"As Mr. Ford normally is, I think he's exaggerating," Hubbard said.
The minority leader declined to name the legislators, but said there were two senators and four representatives who were involved. Both Ford and Senate Minority Leader Roger Bedford, D-Russellville, said there have been discussions about it, but Bedford declined to say how many GOP legislators were speaking with them.
"I know that a number of Republicans are disgusted with these constant attacks on teachers and state employees," Bedford said.
The Senate minority leader said the discussions were "fairly serious."
"I think it could take place within the next year," Ford said. "I think they're just asking to represent their people the way they ought to represent them." |
