Description | A judge has upheld Wisconsin's domestic partnership registry, saying it does not violate the state's ban on gay marriage.
Judge Daniel Moeser said in his ruling released on Monday that the domestic registry law does not create a legal status for partners that is identical or substantially similar to that of marriage and therefore it does not violate the constitutional ban.
Members of the conservative group Wisconsin Family Action filed a lawsuit last summer arguing the registry was unconstitutional. The gay marriage ban was added to the constitution in 2006 and the registry was created in 2009.
The registry grants same-sex couples legal rights such as the right to visit each other in hospitals, make end-of-life decisions and inherit each other's property.
