DescriptionMT. JACKSON -- By Karen Kwiatkowski's calculations, the only way to unseat 6th District Rep. Bob Goodlatte is to get to him before Election Day.

Kwiatkowski, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who now raises cattle with her husband outside Mt. Jackson, has announced her plans to seek the Republican nomination for the 6th District next year.

Goodlatte has represented the party, and the district, since 1992, and has won with little trouble in each election.

The only way to get rid of him, Kwiatkowski said, is to take him out in the Republican primary. She said that is her intention, and she plans to have fun doing it.

"A lot of things he is, I'm not," said Kwiatkowski, 50. "There's a contrast in styles, personality, background. ... Every day I'm more confident I'm going to take him out."

A North Carolina native, she retired to the area in 2003 after 20 years with the Air Force and had voted for Goodlatte until she grew upset with his pushing for a national animal identification system. Kwiatkowski said the program would be a huge burden and too intrusive on small cattle farmers like herself.

"I saw him as an establishment sellout," she said. "I'm not interested in politics, per se. That's not my aspiration. I feel forced into it out of frustration."
