DescriptionCHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Gus R. Douglass, who has served as commissioner or assistant commissioner of West Virginia's Department of Agriculture for more than half of the department's 100-year history, announced Tuesday he will not seek a 12th four-year term in 2012.

"I will retire when my term ends in January 2013," the 84-year-old Douglass said in his state Capitol office.

Douglass was first elected agriculture commissioner in 1964, and has served continuously in the office except for one four-year gap following an unsuccessful run for governor in 1988. Before his first election, he served as assistant commissioner to John T. Johnson for seven years.

In his announcement, Douglass said he believes it is time for a younger person to take the helm of Agriculture, and joked, "I didn't want to break Bob Byrd's record."
