Description | Warning that this election can go “any way,” Stephen Harper kicked off the final stretch of his campaign with a renewed plea for a strong mandate to avoid the economic chaos and national upheaval he claims would accompany a minority government.
And in a nod to surging NDP fortunes that could change election day outcomes, the Conservatives now say they could face a coalition led by NDP Leader Jack Layton.
It’s a new twist on Harper’s campaign refrain that the country’s economic recovery is at risk if Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois win a majority of seats.
“We’ve said all along this election can go any way,” Harper said Saturday morning in Mississauga.
“The choice is a minority Parliament which will have some combination of Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois. If that is the case, they will in all likelihood form a government, take our government off the track of recovery towards higher taxes and back to the era of constitutional and national unity wrangling,” Harper said. |
