DescriptionTRIPOLI, Libya — Embattled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi on Monday insisted he is not stepping down, proclaiming in a media interview: "My people love me. They would die for me."

Even as his forces clamped down in its stronghold in the capital Tripoli, Gadhafi refused to acknowledge that anti-government protests have taken place there. Elsewhere, government tanks, armored vehicles and Jeeps mounted with anti-aircraft guns positioned Monday just outside the rebel-held city of Zawiya, where residents expected an assault from Gadhafi loyalists.

In an interview at a seafront restaurant with ABC News, BBC and The Times of London, Gadhafi denied using force on protesters but said planes had bombed military sites and ammunition depots. He blamed al-Qaida for encouraging young people to seize arms from military installations.

Gadhafi called U.S. President Barack Obama "a good man" but said he felt betrayed by America. "I'm surprised that we have an alliance with the west to fight al-Qaida, and now that we are fighting terrorists they have abandoned us," he said, according to ABC News. "Perhaps they want to occupy Libya."

Asked whether he would step down from power, Gadhafi laughed and said he could not do so because he does not have an official position such as president or king, ABC reported.
