Description | TRIPOLI — Military aircraft fired live ammunition at crowds of anti-government protesters in Tripoli, Al-Jazeera television reported Monday.
The TV network quoted witnesses for its information, but no independent verification of the report was immediately available.
The alleged attack came as protesters celebrated in the streets of the country's second largest city Benghazi, claiming they had taken the city after bloody fighting.
Anti-government unrest spread to Tripoli, the capital, for the first time Sunday with clashes in the city's Green Square.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Monday he had seen some information to suggest that Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi had fled the country and was on his way to Venezuela.
However, a spokesman for the U.K.'s foreign ministry said Hague had been referring to unconfirmed news reports to that effect and a senior source in President Hugo Chavez's government denied that Gadhafi was travelling to Venezuela |
