Description | In his weekly address to the nation, President Barack Obama said boosting overseas trade and encouraging domestic innovation during the next two years is the key to tackling the stubbornly high unemployment rate and revving the sluggish economy.
“Here’s the truth about today’s economy,” the president said. “If we’re serious about fighting for American jobs and American businesses, one of the most important things we can do is open up more markets to American goods around the world.”
Following a series of business-friendly White House policy and staff announcements this week, Obama announced that his administration will establish a new economic council on jobs and competitiveness, led by General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt.
Calling him “one of the most imaginative and visionary business leaders in America,” the president said Immelt’s task is to generate ideas that will spur domestic hiring and raise workforce education levels, as well as attract foreign customers to buy American goods.
“Leading the world in innovation. Opening new markets to American products. That’s how we’ll create jobs today,” Obama said. “That’s how we’ll make America more competitive tomorrow. And that’s how we’ll win the future.” |
