DescriptionDemocrat Barbara Mikulski of Maryland is now the longest-serving woman in Senate history. But neither she nor any other member of the Senate can hold a candle to Maine Sen. Susan Collins' voting record.

Collins began Wednesday's 112th Congress as the longest, currently-serving member to have never missed a roll call vote. She cast her 4,563rd consecutive roll call vote on Dec. 22, and holds a perfect voting record since her 1996 election.

Collins says she was inspired by the late Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine, who never missed a Senate roll call in 13 years before surgery ended the streak at 2,941. Like Smith, Collins says she takes her responsibilities "granted to me by the people of Maine very seriously."
