Description | With the 2010 election behind us, speculation about the big contests of 2012 has already started.
And in Washington state, it's likely to be the governor's race that will grab the most attention - especially if Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna runs, as widely expected.
Governing Magazine today rated Washington's 2012 race a "tossup" if McKenna gets in. Just two other states, Kentucky and West Virginia, would start out in the tossup category, the magazine said.
On the Democratic side, Congressman Jay Inslee is widely mention as a leading contender, assuming Gov. Christine Gregoire doesn't seek a third term.
McKenna would carry a lot of pent up hopes for the state GOP.
The last time Washington state elected a Republican governor was in 1980, when John Spellman beat then-state Sen. Jim McDermott. After one term, marked by a big recession, Spellman was replaced in 1984 by Democrat Booth Gardner. Including that year, it's been eight straight wins for Democrats. |
