DescriptionCHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The state Supreme Court will not make a quick decision on whether there should be a special election to fill the final two years of former Gov. Joe Manchin's term.

In an order issued Monday, the justices gave acting Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, House Speaker Rick Thompson and Secretary of State Natalie Tennant until Dec. 27 to respond to a petition seeking a special election before 2012.

The justices also set a Dec. 15 deadline for other parties to join the case.

Monday's order stemmed from last week's petition filed by the West Virginia Citizen Action Group. The group argues delaying the special election until 2012 violates the state's constitution.
