DescriptionFormer state Sen. Don Perata was handily leading the race to be Oakland's mayor but remained well short of the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid instant-runoff calculations that are expected to begin on Friday.

Whether Perata ends up succeeding Mayor Ron Dellums will depend on whether supporters of lesser-known candidates like Don Macleay or Greg Harland picked him as their second choice. Councilwoman Jean Quan was his closest rival, while Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan and TV political analyst and Professor Joe Tuman trailed.

The election was the first in which Oakland used ranked-choice voting. Unless someone receives more than half the first-place votes, the winner might not be known for several days.
