DescriptionIn a case of words coming back to haunt, Tom Tancredo's campaign Wednesday used Dan Maes' statements from a recent radio interview to demand that the Republican nominee bow out of gubernatorial debates.

Speaking on 630 KHOW on Sept. 9, Maes said Tancredo, the American Constitution Party candidate, should be able to participate in the debates as long as he's polling at least 20 percent.

"Somewhere you have to set the bar and say who comes and who doesn't," Maes said. "The bar was always set on me at 20 percent . . . to get invited to an event. That's my arbitrary number. If you're polling at 20 percent, come on board; if you're not, then you don't come."

Asked in the interview if that standard should apply to himself, Maes said: "Here's what's different about me and career politicians. When I set a rule, I live by it. And I don't change the goalpost when it doesn't suit me well. If hypothetically there was this magical 20 percent rule and I drop below 20 percent, shame on me for dropping below 20 percent, and I should not be included."

The Tancredo campaign dug up Maes' remarks after a recent Fox News poll showed Maes with 15 percent support.

"We'll see if he lives up to it, or if this turns out to be just another one of Dan's tall tales or serial exaggerations," said Bay Buchanan, Tancredo's campaign manager.
