DescriptionRepublican congressional hopeful Francisco “Quico” Canseco has erroneously accused his opponent, District 23 incumbent Ciro Rodriguez, of voting in 2008 for the $700 billion Wall Street bank bailout.
A Canseco for Congress door hanger, which has been widely distributed around the San Antonio area in recent weeks, brands Rodriguez, D-San Antonio, a “career politician with a long history of wasteful spending and more taxes.”

The first item it uses to build its case is the 2008 bailout of the country's ailing financial markets, a plan hatched by the administration of then-President George W. Bush, but widely criticized by many of Bush's fellow Republicans.

The door hanger states that Rodriguez voted for the bailout, and contends the congressman “takes care of Wall Street instead of Main Street.”

In fact, Rodriguez voted against the plan twice, rejecting both the initial bill that failed to win House approval and a revised version that passed four days later.

At the time, Rodriguez cited the political toxicity of the measure and said he couldn't “support a blank check to those who were irresponsible and got us in this position in the first place.”

Scott Yeldell, campaign manager for Canseco, acknowledged his campaign's mistake and said it was corrected two weeks ago when it came to Canseco's attention.

“Unlike what most politicians in Washington will ever do, Quico has taken full responsibility for the error,” Yeldell said.

Rodriguez was the lone San Antonio lawmaker to vote against both versions of the 2008 bailout. Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, a Democrat, and Rep. Lamar Smith, a Republican, both supported it, while Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, whose district includes part of San Antonio, opposed the first version, but voted for it the second time around.
