Even as former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin remains a prominent political figure, the majority of Americans and a significant number of Republicans doubt she could be an effective president, a new 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll shows.

Fifty-nine percent of Americans overall said Palin could not have an effective presidency, according to the poll. Among Republicans, 40 percent said she could not be an effective president. Just 26 percent of Americans had confidence in a Palin presidency.

Palin nevertheless continues to engage conservative audiences, as she did at Saturday's "Restoring Honor" rally on the National Mall.

She has also used her influence to benefit a number of conservative candidates in this year's midterm elections. Republican Senate candidate Joe Miller in Alaska, who appears close to defeating incumbent Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, has attributed his long-shot success in part to the support he received from Palin.
