Description | Many immigrants are granted "refugee" status for admission to the United States to escape political or religious oppression in their native countries. What special title is granted to people also seeking entry into the United States to escape the oppression of poverty in their native lands? The state of Arizona calls them "illegal Immigrants."
The Arizona immigration law was drafted to prevent immigrants from illegally entering the state. If enacted as written, it would legalize the very discriminatory practice of "racial profiling." Fortunately, a federal judge recently struck down this and other discriminatory provisions of the law.
The sponsors of the immigration law sold it to the Arizona citizens as a strong tool to reduce crime and illegal drug sales. But organized crime and organized drug traffickers are too sophisticated to be prosecuted under the law, leaving illegal immigrants as the ones to suffer
The state of California has taken very strong exception to this law. The mayor of San Francisco proposed a moratorium on city employees traveling to Arizona and the leader of the California Senate proposed boycotting all businesses and government agencies from doing business with that state. |
