DescriptionLabour MPs are to oppose a bill that would bring reform to the voting system, it emerged last night.

It raises the prospect of the coalition losing the vote on a referendum being held next May due to the combined threat of opposition from Tory backbenchers.

The decision by the Labour shadow cabinet to oppose the bill is thought to have been spearheaded by Jack Straw, the shadow justice secretary.

The group supports a referendum on AV, but is said to oppose the coupling of the reform with changes to electoral boundaries and a reduction in the number of MPs.
