Description | Rep. Steve Cohen (D) just got a major boost, well ahead of his early August primary. President Barack Obama announced Tuesday that he would endorse the Congressman for a third term.
Cohen won a crowded open-seat primary in 2006 -- when he was the only well-known white candidate in the majority-black 9th district -- and went on to handily defeat attorney Nikki Tinker, who is black, in the 2008 primary.
Race was a major issue in both those primary contests.
This year's primary appears to be no different. Former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton (D) has said that the voters of the 9th district would be better served by a black Congressman and that Tennessee's Congressional delegation lacks diversity.
In his endorsement Tuesday Obama called Cohen "a proven leader" and "a strong voice for Tennessee." |
