DescriptionAlabama Rep. Jo Bonner planned to throw his support to Republican gubernatorial candidate Bradley Byrne Friday, giving Byrne a late shot of support before Tuesday's GOP runoff primary.

A source familiar with the plans told POLITICO Bonner would endorse Byrne at an event in southern Alabama, where Bonner's coastal district lies. The move comes a day after Byrne also won the backing of Rep. Spencer Bachus, who praised Byrne's "integrity and experience" in a statement Thursday evening.

Byrne, who finished first in the first round of primary voting last month, is competing with state Rep. Robert Bentley in next week's vote. An independent poll conducted by the Texas firm Baselice and Associates showed Bentley with a strong, 20-point lead at the end of the week, with Bentley taking 53 percent of the vote to Byrne's 33 percent.
