Description"Former Ohio Rep. Rob Portman raised $2.65 million for his Senate bid in the second quarter of the year, the latest in a series of impressive fundraising hauls that have placed the Republican in a powerful financial position for the general election campaign.

Portman's take brings his war chest to $8.8 million as of July 1. He's already started using his cash reserves to pay for several positive television spots outlining his proposals for job creation and touting his opposition to cap-and-trade energy legislation.

The former Bush administration official has posted powerful fundraising numbers for several quarters in a row now: he raised $2.35 million in the first three months of this year and $1.4 million in the final three months of 2009. Since launching his campaign for Senate, Portman has received support from more than 16,000 donors, a source familiar with his fundraising report said.

Portman's Democratic opponent, Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, has not yet announced his quarterly numbers but is expected to be at a serious disadvantage to Portman when he does. In a report filed with the Federal Election Commission before the Democratic Senate primary, Fisher reported having $906,738 in the bank as of April 14.

The race remains closely matched, according to polls, and Quinnipiac University recently showed Fisher with a two-point edge over Portman, leading 42 percent to 40 percent."
