DescriptionRep. Ken Kennedy, D-Williamsburg, called on state Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler to resign as party leader Tuesday over her handling of the U.S. Senate race in which a political unknown, Alvin Greene, won the June 8 Democratic primary.

Kennedy said Fowler and preferred candidate Vic Rawl, a former Charleston state lawmaker, are to blame for Greene’s ascendency and not the Republican Party. Some Democratic Party loyalists contend the GOP is behind Greene’s winning candidacy.

A Washington-based ethics watchdog Tuesday asked Attorney General Henry McMaster to investigate whether Greene was induced to run for the office.

Kennedy said Greene, who Kennedy said “has issues” and who is facing a felony pornography charge, isn’t to blame for the Democrats’ predicament. Kennedy, who is retiring this year, said he has known Greene and his family for years. He put the blame on Rawl and Fowler.

“(The Greenes) don’t deserve this,” Kennedy said. “They are a good, middle-class black family.”

Greene, despite not actively campaigning, earned more than 100,000 votes and was named on nearly 60 percent of Democratic ballots cast in trouncing Rawl, who Democrats thought could give Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint a stern test in November. Kennedy said Rawl made a miscalculation by assuming he would win the nomination and by not aggressively campaigning. Kennedy thinks “ballot position” — Greene’s name appearing first — is what decided the race.
