DescriptionA statement from Brian Mulroney on Monday that followed the release of the Oliphant report expressed gratitude that an unfortunate chapter in his life was over, that he could now move on.

But is that the case? There remains the not-insignificant matter of $2.1 million in public funds paid to the former prime minister in 1997, to settle a lawsuit Mulroney had launched against the Chretien government. The lawsuit claimed an earlier RCMP investigation of kickbacks in the Airbus affair sullied his good name.

As it turns out, Mulroney ultimately sullied his own good name. And that payout followed court testimony by the former PM that has been found to be untruthful -- so untruthful that Justice Jeffrey Oliphant labelled it "patently absurd."

Specifically: Mulroney, under oath in a Montreal courtroom, was asked about his business relationship with German-born lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber. He said they'd had only a cup of coffee a couple of times, offering no elaboration.

This was at worst a lie, at best extremely misleading. The testimony was given in 1996 -- after the former PM had pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars from Schreiber in hotel rooms and a coffee shop.
