DescriptionLONDON (MarketWatch) -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced he would resign as prime minister on Tuesday, clearing the way for Conservative leader David Cameron to form the country's next government. Brown immediately departed to Buckingham Palace to deliver his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II. The Conservatives are widely expected to form a government with the support of the third-party Liberal Democrats, ending five days of negotiations in the wake of last week's general election, which saw the Conservatives win the most seats but fall short of an outright majority in the House of Commons. Brown's resignation ends 13 years of rule by the Labour Party.
