Description | Republican J.D. Hayworth has filed thousands of nominating petition signatures to challenge incumbent John McCain for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.
Hayworth on Monday went to the Secretary of State's Office with a box containing what he said were 11,483 voter signatures. That's more than twice the 5,609 required to qualify for the Aug. 24 primary election ballot.
A spokesman for the Secretary of State said the office will count the signatures and certify Hayworth for the ballot if there are enough.
Hayworth said he hopes that certification for the ballot will encourage McCain to accept the challenger's invitation to debate him in all 15 counties. |
