Description | Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) is discovering that this is the wrong year to be accused of having gone Washington.
With four serious Republican candidates challenging the 14-term GOP incumbent in the May 4 primary, Burton is in jeopardy of losing his party’s nomination, a victim of sharp anti-incumbent sentiment and of widespread antagonism from the local political establishment.
Complaints that Burton hasn’t focused enough of his attention on his Indianapolis-area district date back to the congressman’s aggressive and single-minded 1990s-era investigations into the Clinton administration, his advocacy of alternative medicine and reports that he missed a series of votes over the years to play in the Bob Hope Classic, a celebrity golf tournament — evidence, say Burton foes, that the veteran conservative has become isolated from the everyday concerns of his constituents.
Critics also point to Burton’s focus on singular issues in the House — hearings highlighting the link between vaccines and childhood autism and his introduction of legislation seeking to outlaw the export of American horses for slaughter in foreign countries. |
