DescriptionThe White House is firmly rejecting Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele's suggestion that he and President Barack Obama face extra political challenges because they are black.

"I think that is a fairly silly comment to make," Gibbs told reporters Monday morning, with a hard shot at the spending scandals afflicting the RNC under Steele: "I think Michael Steele's problem isn't the race card; it's the credit card."

Steele appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday to defend himself from charges of financial mismanagement, including last week's reports that the RNC had spent thousands of dollars on reimbursements for an event at a California strip club.

Asked if he had less room for error as chairman because of his race, Steele told George Stephanopoulos that the "honest answer is yes."

"Barack Obama has a slimmer margin. A lot of folks do," he said. " My view on politics is much more grass-roots-oriented. It’s not old-boy network oriented and so I tend to come at it a little bit stronger, a little more streetwise if you will. That rubs some feathers the wrong way."
