Description | A jury acquitted State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV of a misdemeanor DWI charge Thursday, but found him guilty of the lesser traffic violation.
The Harlem Democrat, who did not take the stand in his own defense, must pay a $375 fine for driving while ability impaired.
He will also lose his drivers license for 90 days and be required to take a drunk driving course.
The jury took only a few hours to reach a verdict in the case that began Wednesday.
While speaking to reporters outside the courtroom Thursday, Powell said on the night of his arrest in March 2008, he had gone to a New York Knicks game and went to two different nightclubs with friends, and that he had only two drinks over a five-hour period.
"I do respect the verdict, but I do disagree," said Powell. "I don't think two drinks on a man of my size in a five hour period makes me impaired. We don't live in a zero-tolerance state, and I don't think that's impairment. But again, the jury probably took some of the officer's lies." |
