DescriptionFormer Representative J.D. Hayworth made his long-discussed and long-expected primary challenge to Senator John McCain in Arizona official today.

Mr. Hayworth, who served six terms in the House, formally announced his candidacy at his Phoenix campaign headquarters, casting himself as a conservative outsider standing up against the Washington establishment. He is now in the midst of a three-day tour of the state that will take him to, among other places, Tucson and Mesa.

With the Senate on recess this week, Mr. McCain, the Republican nominee for president in 2008, also has a string of campaign events back in Arizona. He is scheduled to appear with Senator Jon Kyl, also of Arizona and the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, on Friday.
