Description | SAN ANGELO, Texas — A small group of local Democratic leaders gathered Monday night to watch the two relatively unknown Democratic front runners for governor introduce themselves to voters.
In the hourlong debate, the successful, Palestinian-born businessman Farouk Shami and the popular former mayor of Houston Bill White answered questions about social issues such as abortion, gay marriage and the death penalty, and also addressed health care and job creation. The debate was the first and only for the Democratic gubernatorial contenders.
Most of the local Democrats who attended the watch party at party headquarters said they had decided to support White after meeting the candidate when he came to San Angelo late last year for a luncheon.
Erma Brooks, a new member of the Tom Green County Democratic Club board, said she has met White on two occasions and is voting for him because of his proven track record. Anyone who can get re-elected twice for mayor by overwhelming majorities in a city such as Houston, “has to know what he’s doing,” Brooks said, adding that she thinks White is someone who does not and would not as governor cater to special interests.
“He seems to be a person of all the people,” Brooks said. |
