The second session of the 111th Congress opens this week as the House returns to begin what promises to be an intense and partisan year.
With mostly noncontroversial business on the floor, however, the real activity will be elsewhere around the Capitol as House Democrats gather for a retreat and continue negotiations with their Senate counterparts over a final health care measure.
In addition, the House Intelligence Committee is preparing to hold the first Congressional hearing on the failed attempt to detonate a bomb aboard Flight 253 on Christmas Day, with administration witnesses scheduled to testify in a closed session on Wednesday.
Rather than travel to Williamsburg, Va., as they have in the past, House Democrats will gather in Washington for their annual issues conference, with the focus on job creation – an issue Democrats hope to emphasize as they head toward the November elections.
Before the three-day retreat that begins Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday is leading a bipartisan delegation to Detroit for the North American International Auto Show to examine new auto technologies and discuss what Congress has done for the industry in recent months. |
