DescriptionAfter nearly 39 years of Progressive Conservative rule in Alberta, the defections of two members of the government to a right-wing newcomer signals for the first time a potential shift in the provincial political landscape.

Until Monday, the Wildrose Alliance Party, which bills itself as the “true conservative” party in the province, had only one MLA, but it has been building momentum to present a real challenge to the leadership of Premier Ed Stelmach.

“For any PC to abandon the perks, prestige and the security of a governing caucus of 70 to join a caucus of one in a party that's still not two years old, well that would require a level of courage and commitment to principle that is rarely seen in politics,” said Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith, as she made the announcement in Calgary.

Former cabinet minister Heather Forsyth, who has represented Calgary-Fish Creek for the Tories since 1993, and Rob Anderson, who was first elected in 2008 in the Calgary-area riding of Airdrie-Chestermere, accused Mr. Stelmach of running a “dysfunctional” government and implementing bad policies.
