DescriptionBOSTON, Ma. -- Teresa Heinz Kerry has announced she is being treated for breast cancer.

Kerry, 71, said she first learned about her condition during a routine mammogram in September. She has already undergone several procedures. She's scheduled for five days of targeted radiation next month that doctors said could improve her chances of successful treatment to 95 percent.

Kerry is the wife of Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and the widow of the late Sen. John Heinz.

She is being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital. Her surgeon is the same one she recommended to Elizabeth Edwards, who found out she had breast cancer just as her husband, former Sen. John Edwards, of North Carolina, was concluding his stint as Kerry's vice presidential running mate.
