Description | The number of Americans who applied for first-time jobless benefits fell last week to the lowest level since early January, the Labor Department reported this morning.
Initial claims fell 33,000 to a seasonally adjusted 521,000 in the week ending Oct. 3.
Continuing claims, which measure the number of people receiving benefits through the standard 26-week unemployment insurance program, fell by 72,000 to 6.04 million in the week ending Sept. 26, the lowest since late March.
