DescriptionChennai: Down's Syndrome, a genetic chromosomal disorder, could be detected with prenatal screening using required tests, giving the pregnant women the choice to go ahead with the pregnancy or terminate it, doctors operating in the field said today.

Dr S Suresh and Dr Indrani Suresh, Directors, Mediscan and Dr Rekha Ramachandran, Chairperson, Down's Syndrome Association, Tamil Nadu told reporters here that a combination of tests during pregnancy would allow the woman make a decision on terminating it.

"Pregnant women in the age group of over 35 years carry more risk of delivering a baby with Down's Syndrome, where the 21st chromosome, which is normally a pair, is represented as triplicate in individuals," Suresh said.

Screening test during 11-14 weeks of pregnancy and the "invasive" diagnostic test, which involve the testing of chromosomes directly from fetal tissue samples for "high risk" women, are the tests involved, Suresh said.
