Description | Today, at City Hall in Portland, the Maine Freedom to Marry campaign and supporters of marriage equality gathered to announce that over 60,000 Mainers have pledged to defend Maine’s marriage equality law by voting NO on Question 1 in November. This announcement comes the day before the opposition is set to submit the necessary 55,087 signatures to get the issue on the ballot for a November referendum to the Secretary of State.
The noon press conference highlighted the grassroots efforts of our campaign, which I have been working with on behalf of HRC since January. Hundreds of volunteers across the state are working every day by knocking on doors, making phonecalls, and talking to their friends and neighbors about why it is important to protect the freedom to marry in Maine.
Campaign manager, Jesse Connolly also announced that the official name of the campaign will be “No on 1: Protect Maine Equality” effective immediately. “These 60,000 pledges, collected by Maine volunteers and the campaign’s professional field staff, demonstrate that our grassroots effort is a campaign about Maine, by Maine people and consistent with Maine values” said Connolly. |
