Description | Birkett running for Illinois attorney general
July 2, 2009
From Staff Reports
Though he's spent the last several months talking about a potential run for Illinois governor, DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett announced online Thursday that he will remain a prosecutor -- and run for Illinois attorney general in 2010.
The announcement marks Birkett's third attempt at statewide office, and his second for attorney general. He lost the attorney general's race in 2002 to then-state Sen. Lisa Madigan. Birkett was Judy Baar Topinka's running mate as lieutenant governor in the 2006 Republican loss to then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
"I want to do the job I began 28 years ago and build on my record of success," Birkett, an Aurora Central Catholic High School graduate, said in a posted video. "There is a lot of work that can be done."
Birkett said he plans to work closely with the General Assembly to create and reform laws to adjust to the needs of society. He promised to protect citizens against street gang violence, and bring his ideas to Illinois' forefront.
"I'm excited about the run," he said.
