DescriptionCongressman Jim Matheson, D-Utah, will arrange to have an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to commemorate an anniversary or graduation. He also says his staff will help arrange for White House greeting cards for Scouting awards.

It must be tough to tear himself away from such heavy burdens, but one wonders why our congressman can't show up to meet publicly with his constituents and the press. Several people have been trying to line up a meeting to talk about things like the on-going genocide in Darfur, worldwide slavery, torture and the irresponsible energy policies that are leading our world toward irreversible catastrophic climate disruption (aided and abetted by Matheson).

Desiring to set up a public meeting during which we could discuss major human rights concerns, we went to Matheson's Web site, where we clicked on two tabs marked "request an appointment." Both led to a page that said, "Requested page could not be found." Then we went to the "comments" section of his Web site and requested to meet with Matheson regarding U.S. human rights policies. No response.

Then Rabbi Marc Gafni; Ashley Anderson, chair of the Salt Lake City Chapter of High Road for Human Rights; and I (executive director of HRHR) sent a letter on April 1 requesting a public meeting to discuss major human rights issues. Again, not one word of response from Matheson.

On April 8, Dylan Schneider, HRHR chapter coordinator, sent an e-mail to Matheson's "Scheduler/District Outreach Coordinator," informing her that a request for a public meeting had been mailed and faxed a week earlier.

Matheson's scheduler e-mailed back: "Unfortunately, the congressman will not be able to meet over this recess, but I will look into the next available date and get back to you as quickly as possible." That was almost two months ago.
