Description | Ann Widdecombe today threw herself into the contest to become the next Commons Speaker, saying many Tory MPs had offered her their support.
The former prisons minister insisted she had never ruled herself out, as initially thought, but would only take over from Michael Martin on an interim basis until the next general election.
She said that a formal declaration of her candidacy would depend on the response from the Labour side of the Commons. |
