Description | Democrats will have a heavily contested primary for governor in 2010 with several stars of the party fighting it out. Republicans are still unsure who will be on the other side of the ballot next year.
Greenville businessman Tim James, son of former two-term Gov. Fob James, is the only Republican who has announced that he is running. Many people overlook him when talking about the 2010 race, but he has been traveling the state, has loaned his campaign $2 million, and has hired veteran advisers.
"I think this is one of those rare occasions when we have essentially no clear cut frontrunner, no overwhelming frontrunner in either party, nobody who has it in the bag at this point," said Jess Brown, political science professor at Athens State University. "There are a lot of unknowns in both primaries."
But, Brown said, "of the cast of characters being mentioned at the present time, Congressman Davis would be viewed as the frontrunner on the Democratic side and the Republican field would be more open." |
