DescriptionWashington - President Barack Obama has big plans for the country, from overhauling the nation's health care system to dramatically changing the way that people consume energy.

His success, however, could largely hinge on a group of moderate Democrats in the Senate - including Sen. Herb Kohl - who won't necessarily go along with everything the president wants.

As major pieces of legislation make their way through Congress this year, a new group of senators dubbed the Moderate Dems Working Group could exercise considerable influence over the fine details in those bills.

"There is a positive role for a group of Democrats who still believe we need to be fiscally responsible and have a dialogue with amenable people of the other party," said Kohl, a Milwaukee Democrat who is part of the 15-member coalition.

The group has been assailed by liberal commentators, activists and bloggers who say they could impede Obama's sweeping domestic agenda. Rachel Maddow, a liberal television personality, is mocking the group of senators as "conservadems."
