DescriptionAmid the hustle and bustle of ASU’s West and Downtown campuses on Thursday, 13 students dropped everything and froze for 3 minutes.

Members of the ASU chapter of national organization Free the Slaves participated in the freeze-in to draw attention to the 27 million people worldwide and 10,000 people in the U.S. living in slavery.

“People just don’t have a clue what’s going on,” said social justice and human rights graduate student Becky Coplan, secretary of the newly formed ASU club. “This generation has the opportunity to end slavery worldwide — it’ll take a lot of work — but we can do it.”

Though many people only think of modern slavery in terms of the sex trade, many forms exist and the problem is not limited to foreign countries, Coplan said.

Michael Stancliff, an assistant professor of rhetoric and composition at the West campus, said that even Arizona is known to some as a hot spot for slavery, another reason why the club was eager to hold the freeze-in today.

Stancliff said that slavery in Arizona is related to the proximity of the U.S.-Mexico border.

With club members acting simultaneously in the West campus’ cafeteria in the University Center Building, the effect was a noticeable disruption to the flow of surroundings.

“We chose something out of the ordinary because acceptance of slavery is so devastatingly ordinary,” said Stancliff, the club’s faculty advisor.
