DescriptionLt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr. today said he would seek re-election as lieutenant governor in 2010 and will not run for the Democratic nomination for governor.

"I want to continue to serve in a position of influence at this critical time," Folsom said. "I will seek re-election as lieutenant governor."


Folsom, 59, was elected lieutenant governor in 2006. He served eight years on the Public Service Commission, 1978-86; and was elected lieutenant governor in 1986 and 1990. He became govenror in April 1993 when Gov. Guy Hunt was convicted of a felony and had to relinquish the office.

Folsom ran for governor in 1994 and lost to Republican Fob James.

Folsom and his wife, Marsha, live in Cullman. Folsom is the son of former governor James "Big Jim" Folsom.
