Description[VANCOUVER – Feb. 16, 2009] – “Obamania” is alive and well in Canada, as the vast majority of people from coast to coast will follow Barack Obama’s official visit to Ottawa this week, a new Angus Reid Strategies poll for Maclean’s has found.

In the online survey of a national representative sample, 82 per cent of respondents approve of Obama’s performance as president of the United States so far. In contrast, 38 per cent of respondents approve of Stephen Harper’s performance as Prime Minister of Canada, and 42 per cent are satisfied with Michael Ignatieff’s job as head of the Official Opposition.

Obama, a Democrat, was inaugurated on Jan. 20 in Washington DC. He will make first official trip abroad to Canada on Feb. 19. Six-in-ten (61%) Canadians will follow Obama’s visit on television. Around half will keep track of it online (54%) and through newspapers and magazines (50%). A lower proportion (26%) will tune in to the radio for news on Obama’s time in Ottawa.

Although admiration for the first African American U.S. president runs high in Canada, people express doubts about the potential impact of his policies on our country. Roughly six-in-ten (59%) respondents say Obama’s policies will be good for the environment, and 54 per cent think his policies will be good for the Canadian economy. More than half of respondents predict Obama’s administration will have a positive impact on border security (51%) and energy policy in Canada (53%). However, fewer Canadians think the U.S. president will benefit trade in Canada (41%) or the North American Auto Industry (38%).
