Description | State Rep. Tyrone Yates of Cincinnati announced this morning that he will run for the Democratic nomination to succeed retiring Republican Sen. George V. Voinovich in 2010.
Yates joins Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher in a Democratic field that soon could get a fourth candidate -- Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune.
"Todd is deeply committed to the race, as I am," Yates told The Dispatch after Gov. Ted Strickland's State of the State address on Jan. 28.
Portune was in Washington today and could not be reached for comment. He has consulted Democratic officials around the state about a possible Senate bid.
Yates, a four-term House member who also is a former vice-mayor of Cincinnati and Ohio assistant attorney general, said he has formally established the Tyrone K. Yates for U.S. Senate Exploratory Committee. Yates said last month that he was undaunted by the prospect of two better-known Democrats -- Fisher and Brunner -- running in the primary on May 4. 2010.
"You can't anoint for a United States Senate seat, so the desire is that the party have an open primary process and let's see how it shakes out," Yates said. "Something inside of me tells me that at the end of the day I'll prevail."
Former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman of Cincinnati is the only Republican to enter the race so far. |
