Description | Republican governors mentioned as White House hopefuls are split over whether the party's next leader will be centrist or conservative.
The GOP comeback can start with major victories in the 38 gubernatorial elections over the next two years, said Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) at the National Governors Association meeting in Washington this weekend.
Unexpected wins by statewide GOP candidates in the early 1990s, including in New Jersey and Massachusetts, foretold the 1994 Republican takeover of Congress, noted Barbour, a former Republican National Committee chairman mentioned as a possible future presidential candidate.
"When people want to talk about 2012, I tell them any Republican who's not thinking about 2009 and 2010 are not keeping their eye on the ball," he said. "These are the elections that count for Republicans. And that's what we governors are focused on." |
