Description | Tennie Rogers, a perennial political candidate who twice campaigned for the Republican presidential nomination, died Thursday. She was 81.
A graveside service is set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson.
She was born Aug. 1, 1927, in Russell, Ark. After graduating from high school there, she attended Harding University in Searcy, Ark.; Pasadena City College in Pasadena, Calif.; and California State University in Los Angeles, Calif. She earned a bachelor's degree in bioscience and business education, a master's degree in secondary education and became a registered nurse.
On Nov. 21, 1951, she married Ivan Kenneth Rogers.
Rogers, who moved to Tulsa in 1993, was on Republican primary ballots in 1992 in nine states, including Oklahoma, and on two states' ballots in 1996. She was not on the Oklahoma ballot that year.
The former nurse and educator also ran twice for Congress from Oklahoma.
In 2000, Rogers finished sixth in a seven-candidate Republican primary field for the Second District seat being vacated by Tom Coburn.
Two years later, she sought the vacant Fourth District seat in southwest Oklahoma, even though she did not live in the district. She finished fourth in a six-way GOP primary won by Tom Cole, the seat's ultimate winner.
Rogers' daughter Evelyn Rogers, another frequent candidate, also ran for Congress in 2000 and 2002 from the First District.
She is survived by her daughter; a son, Raymond Rogers; a sister, Ida Marie Stolk; and a granddaughter. |
